Tenuta San Guido
Transforming Bolgheri into what many believe is the country’s most exciting and dynamic wine region, the acclaimed Tenuta San Guido, established by Mario Incisa della Rochetta, is considered Italy’s most sought-after fine wine and the ultimate expression of the "Super Tuscan".
The name Sassicaia, indicating a stony field, originated in 1948 when first using Cabernet Sauvignon vines reputedly sourced from the eminent Bordeaux estate Château Lafite-Rothschild. The innovative decision to plant French grape varieties at Tenuta San Guido was partly due to the similar terrain to that of the Graves appellation of Bordeaux.
At a Decanter tasting of "great clarets", a trusted panel including Hugh Johnson, Serena Sutcliffe and Clive Coates awarded the 1972 Sassicaia first place over a staggering selection of 33 wines from 11 countries.
Tenuta San Guido was the first ever-Italian estate to have its own estate DOC, boasting international consultants Giacomo Tachis and Émile Peynaud at the heart of its winemaking.
The estate produces a second and third fine wine, Guidalberto and Le Difese composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Tenuta San Guido is member of the prestigious Primum Familiae Vini.
