Sonoma Valley
Located on California’s glorious North coast, Sonoma Valley boasts three official wine-growing regions, Sonoma Country, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. With vineyards extending from Los Carneros in the South to Alexander Valley in the north, the excellent climate and prime soils of Sonoma offer more different types of wine than any other fine-wine producing region in California.
Franciscan monks first planted the vineyards in 1823, official boundaries for the Sonoma Valley wine region were granted 1981. Today there are over 254 wineries, covering 65,000 acres. Sonoma Valley excels with many diverse grape varieties, but its two most renowned are Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.
The cooler areas of Sonoma, such as Russian River Valley, Green Valley, and the Sonoma Coast produce some of California’s finest Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, Zinfandels, and sparkling wines. Sonoma’s most famous wineries include Gallo Family Wineries, Kendall-Jackson, Korbel, Simi, Vérité Wines, Sebastiani, Jordan and Gloria Ferrer.
