Argentina wines
Being the fifth largest wine producer in the world, Argentina has quickly become a giant in the wine industry. Previously focusing on quantity versus quality, being that around 90% of the wine produced was consumed locally. Today, Argentina is the largest wine exporter in South America.
The major wine regions of Argentina are located in the western part of the country near the Andes Mountains with Mendoza being the largest, followed by San Juan, La Rioja, Salta, Catamarca, Neuquén, and Rio Negro.
Strict wine laws and regulations in Argentina have imposed that if a grape variety was named on the label, the wine had to consist 100% of said variety. The most poplar varieties grown in Argentina are: Cereza, Criolla Chica, Criolla Grande (pink skin grapes), Malbec, Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo (reds) and Pedro Giménez (white).
Some of the most spectacular wines from Argentina come from producers such as Vina Cobos, Luigi Bosca, Catena Zapata, Achaval Ferrer…
