Romanée Saint Vivant GC
Romanée-Saint-Vivant is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and prestigious Grand Cru vineyard for fine red wines in the Côte de Nuits sub region of Burgundy.
Encircled by Vosne's best Premier Cru vineyards, Romanée-St-Vivant undoubtedly boasts some of the finest terroir available, conveying unique flavors. The prestigious AOC was granted in 1936.
Romanée-St-Vivant’s rich history takes from the Abbey of Saint Vivant, which in medieval times owned several vineyards among the Vosne-Romanée Grands Crus. The French Revolution dissolved the abbey's control, and eventually the reputed Marey-Monge family bought the vineyard.
Today, there are several vineyard owners in Romanée-Saint-Vivant, although Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest. The area is a supreme expression of the Pinot noir grape variety.
The clay-rich soil is highly cherished by producers within this appellation. Clay is often considered to make a more feminine fine wine than limestone rich terrain, which is the source of many powerful vintages.
Some of the high-ranking producers in this wine region include; Domaine Robert Arnoux, Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils, Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuro, Domaine Dujac, Domaine Leroy, Lucien Le Moine and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
