Pomerol

The smallest of Bordeaux’s prized wine-growing regions; Pomerol covers an area of 784 hectares producing exclusively red wines. Cultivated by the Romans, the Barbanne River at its northern border was historically considered the acclaimed frontier between the Langues d'oïl and Langue d'oc language division.

The region's distance from the sea and estuary, creates a glorious continental microclimate. Its diverse soil of gravel, sand and clay adapts perfectly to the popular Merlot grape variety, with Cabernet Franc as the second star grape blend. Pomerol fine wines are typically enjoyed much younger than other red Bordeaux varieties.

Omitted from the original classifications, Pomerol has earned its reputation as one of the most prestigious Bordeaux AOCs, with the influential Pierre Moueix often credited. His eminent Château Pétrus is unofficially grouped with the First Growths of Bordeaux. Château L'Évangile, Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Château Lafleur, Château Latour à Pomerol, Château Trotanoy and Vieux Château Certan are also considered outstanding fine wine producers.
