Château Cos d’Estournel has a long and distinguished history as a Bordeaux wine property in theSaint Estepheappellation and is very famous for its unique architecture (indian inspiration). Classified as a prestigiousSecond Growth in the original Bordeaux Classification of 1855and often considered as the archetypal Saint-Estèphe, Château Cos d’Estournel owes its name to Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, after its creation in 1811. But also from « Cos » which means literally in Gascony « Rocks hill ».
After severals changes of ownership (Such as Fernand Ginestet, co-owner ofChâteau Margaux), the estate was owned in 2000 by Michel Reybier, a rich and passionate industrialist (former owner of Aoste Group, co-owner of Mama Shelter, and owner of Palace/luxury hotels). He has invested a substantial amount in the wine making facilities in particular. Nowadays, Château Cos d’Estournel is known to have one of the most beautiful and modern wine cellar in Bordeaux (Wilmotte & Associés architects).
Perched on a magnificent emplacement of the Médoc, Château Cos d’Estournel enjoys an unimpeded view over the Gironde estuary from the highest hill of the area. The Estate is a direct neighbour ofChâteau Lafite Rothschild. The terroir is very complex, made up with clay, gravel, sand and limestone soil.
Cos d’Estournel’s vineyard consist of 91 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%), producing a sublime second wine, «Les Pagodes de Cos» and since 2015 « Cos d’Estournel Blanc ». The wine is powerful, concentrated and majestic, “Semper fidelis” as mentioned on the front label.
In 2018, Château Cos D’Estournel’s technical team released Cos 100. A tribute to Women for their contribution to the first war effort. At this period, women farmers had to assume from 1914, the hard works of the vineyards work. Composed exclusively of Merlot harvested in 2015 on the « Women’s parcel » planted 100 years ago. All the funds will be donated to the association: Elephant family.
