The property’s old name is “Domaine de Francs” and combines an amazing mix of ancient archeological remains, such as Roman columns and wells, Carolingian vault, medieval pyramid, and a chapel blessed by Pope Leo XIII himself. The exceptional flora proves the presence of Romans due to the presence of wild tulips and Byzantine gladioli, still grown there.
Handed down through 14 generations of the David-Beaulieu family, its successive occupants have always produced superb Saint Emilion wines. In 1874, Edouard Feret mentioned in his famous classification this 9Ha property which produced a surprising mellow wine with a remarkably long-lingering bouquet.
Thanks to the quality of its biotope and the variety of the flora surrounding the vineyards, there is a healthy and sustainable viticulture process. Natural predators are allowed to play their role in the limitation of soil erosion and controlling yields. Natural compost is applied from time to time. COUTET is one of the 58 French wine estates (only 2 in Bordeaux) that have always worked using ancestral organic methods.
The notoriety of Chateau COUTET comes of course from its historical and complete organic philosophy and heritage. Recently it has become even more obvious to several professionals from Japan (Chefs and Sommeliers) that there was something truly special about COUTET: the unique mellow character of the wine slowly releases umami flavors!
